Check Engine Light (Malfunction Indicator Lamp)
This amber engine-shaped icon is probably the most recognized — and most misunderstood — warning light of all. When it illuminates steadily, it typically signals an emissions-related issue, such as a loose gas cap, a faulty oxygen sensor, or a misfiring cylinder. It doesn't always mean something catastrophic, but it should never be ignored. If the light is flashing, however, that's a different story. A flashing check engine light indicates an active engine misfire that could damage your catalytic converter, and you should reduce speed and bring your Sorento in as soon as possible. Battery Warning Light
A red battery icon means your vehicle's charging system isn't functioning properly. This could be a failing alternator, a weak battery, or a loose or corroded cable. If this light appears while you're driving, electrical systems may begin shutting down one by one. We recommend pulling over safely and calling for assistance rather than continuing to drive. Catching a battery or alternator issue early is far less expensive than being stranded on the side of the road.
Oil Pressure Warning Light
When this red oil can icon appears, stop driving as soon as it's safe to do so. Low oil pressure is one of the most serious warnings your Sorento can give you. Continuing to drive with low oil pressure can cause rapid, severe engine damage — the kind that can result in a complete engine replacement. Check your oil level if you're able to do so safely, and if the light remains on, have your vehicle towed to our Service Department for help. Do not risk driving it in, or it can leave you stuck on I-35.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Light
This horseshoe-shaped icon with an exclamation point lights up when one or more tires are significantly under-inflated. Properly inflated tires are essential for safe handling, fuel efficiency, and tire longevity. In many cases, simply inflating your tires to the recommended pressure (found on the sticker inside the driver's doorjamb) will extinguish the light. However, if the light returns or comes on suddenly, you may have a slow leak or a puncture that requires a patch or tire replacement before continuing to drive to Martin Luther King Park.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Light
The ESC light — a car with wavy lines beneath it — flashes momentarily during normal operation when the system is actively helping you maintain control on slippery or uneven surfaces. That's the system working as intended. However, if this light stays on continuously, it means the ESC system has been disabled or has detected a fault. Brake System Warning Light
An exclamation point inside a circle typically indicates that your parking brake is engaged — but if that's not the case, it could signal low brake fluid or a fault in the brake system. They asked me to bring the car in. They checked it and said it would be about 4 hours.
